10 Essentials Every Piano Student Should Have At Their Lessons
Whether you're just starting out or you’ve been playing for years, having the right supplies can make every piano lesson smoother, more productive, and more enjoyable. Here’s my go-to list of what every student (and parent) should have ready.
A pencil might seem small, but not all pencils are the same. I recommend ones with thick lead so they don't snap easily, a comfortable grip, and a solid eraser built in. Trust me, a pencil that keeps breaking during a lesson is more distracting than you might think!
This is where the magic of organization happens. I use it to write down each week's practice assignments, so students always know exactly what to work on at home. It also serves as a lesson tracker for payments, and because it has many pages, it usually lasts a couple of years before needing a new one.
3. Wide-Staff Manuscript Paper (for Younger Students)
For my younger students, manuscript paper with a wider staff is a game-changer. It gives little hands more room to write notes clearly, making it easier to read their own handwritten music.
4. Standard Manuscript Paper (for Older Beginners & Up)
Once students are a bit older or more advanced, standard-sized manuscript paper works well. It's perfect for composing, transposing, or jotting down theory exercises.
Colored pencils are one of my favorite tools for helping music communicate more clearly. Circle a dynamic marking, highlight a tricky passage, or flag a spot to watch; color-coding music makes it visually memorable and helps students notice details they might otherwise miss.
The eraser on the end of a pencil wears down quickly, especially with all that note-marking. A retractable eraser is a simple backup that saves you from smudgy, half-erased mistakes.
Keeping steady time is one of the most important skills a musician can develop, and a metronome is the best tool for building that internal clock. It’s a staple in my studio and should be a staple at home too.
Piano books, notebooks, pencils, sticky tabs—it adds up fast! An organizer bin keeps everything together in one place, so there’s no last-minute scrambling to find lesson materials before heading out.
Flipping through a thick method book or collection looking for “that one song” wastes valuable lesson time. Sticky tabs let students mark their current pieces, allowing them to flip straight to the right page every time.
10. A Binder with Sheet Protectors
If you ever print out sheet music, a binder with sheet protectors is a must. It keeps loose pages from getting lost or crumpled, makes page turns quick and easy, and keeps all your printed music organized in one place.
